Assessment
What happens during a speech and language assessment, and why it matters.
A speech and language assessment is the first step before any therapy. It answers three questions: how your child (or you) communicates now, whether there is a difficulty, and what would help.
An assessment usually includes an interview about development and the languages used at home, observation and play, standardized tests where they are appropriate, and a sample of everyday language. You then receive the results and recommendations.
These articles explain what tests measure, why scores are only part of the picture, and how bilingual children can be assessed fairly.
