Stuttering
Understanding stuttering and how families can help.
Many young children go through periods of repeating words or phrases while their language grows quickly. Stuttering is different: repeated sounds or syllables, stretched sounds, or blocks where no sound comes out, sometimes with tension or frustration.
Stuttering has neurological and genetic roots. It is not caused by parenting or by nervousness. Many preschool children who begin to stutter stop on their own, while others continue, and it is hard to predict which.
These articles explain how to tell typical disfluency from stuttering, what parents can do at home and when to consult. Speech therapy can help children, teens and adults who stutter communicate with more ease and confidence.
