Social communication & neurodiversity

Pragmatics, gestalt language processing, autism, ADHD and selective mutism.

Social communication is how we use language with other people: taking turns, staying on topic, reading facial expressions and adjusting what we say to the listener. Some children, including many autistic children and children with ADHD, communicate in ways that differ from what adults expect.

These articles cover pragmatic language, gestalt language processing and echolalia, ADHD and language, and selective mutism. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming: the goal is comfortable, effective communication, not making a child appear more “typical”.

If your child’s communication with friends or at school worries you, a speech-language pathologist can help you understand their profile and what support would help.

Let's talk about what you're noticing.
